Emergency Department Refurbishment and new Entrance

Emergency Department Refurbishment and new Entrance

Project Summary

Burrows Graham have been appointed as structural consultants for the complete remodelling of the Southport Emergency Department (ED) to provide a service better streamlined for the provision of care. This required undertaking a full structural survey of the operational areas of the current ED to determine the areas which can be removed and which areas required structural compensatory works. This included a full drainage review and design.

The new entrance feature required a piled foundation solution as the ground conditions are particularly poor. Significant services covered the new entrance footprint which required careful co-ordination with the MEP Consultant. The main SW drainage run in down the front of the building is being diverted along with several minor FW drainage runs.

Key Engineering Challenges

  • Working in an incredibly tight site which remained operational throughout
  • Driving piles through in an area with many services and drainage runs
  • Particularly poor ground conditions required piling to be undertaken in close proximity to consulting rooms and wards. Bottom driven steel cased piles minimised the acoustic impact
