Endoscopy Unit

Endoscopy Unit

Project Summary

Burrows Graham was responsible for civil and structural engineering design services for the construction of a new Edoscopy Suite on Southport Hospital. As with most hospital sites, space is an absolute premium. A little used car parking and skip storage are was determined as the best position for this much needed additional facility. This site is very constrained with treatment suites within 1.5m on one side and the entrance to the morgue limiting the available space on the other.  The ground conditions were particularly poor with bottom driven steel cased piles being used for the foundation and slab foundations. A teel framed superstructure was adopted with SFS panels providing the building envelope and internal Partition walls.

The building has been designed such that a second storey can be added with minimal structural alterations if required.

Key Engineering Challenges

  • Working in an incredibly tight site which remained operational throughout
  • Particularly poor ground conditions required piling to be undertaken in close proximity to consulting rooms and wards. Bottom driven steel cased piles minimised the acoustic impact. Careful vibration monitoring was required adjacent sensitive apparatus
